The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced that it will hold an open house designed for the public to provide input and ideas for the Father Marquette Memorial Property and Welcome Center north of the Mackinac Bridge. The open house will be held on Thursday, Aug. 8, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Little Bear East Arena, 275 Marquette St. in St. Ignace.
The Father Marquette Museum was destroyed by lightning, and the memorial site has been utilized as a day-use area since then, averaging 17,000 visitors per year. Currently, there are a picnic area, hiking trails and the Father Marquette National Memorial at this location.
“We want to engage participants in this open house and provide an opportunity for people to discuss their long-term visions for these properties,” said Michigan Historical Center Director Sandra Clark.
The meeting will be facilitated and interactive, allowing attendees to share their ideas with each other. Staff members from the DNR and Michigan Department of Transportation will also participate, including presenting a brief overview of past planning, and answering questions regarding the memorial and the welcome center.
For more information about this open house or for accommodations needed to attend, contact Wayne Burnett, DNR park manager, at 906-643-8620 (TTY/TDD711 Michigan Relay Center for the hearing impaired) at least five business days before the open house.
