(Marquette, Michigan) –The UP Chapter of the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association is hosting a regional assembly of wooden canoes and canoe lovers in Marquette, MI on August 3 and 4, 2013. The Assembly will be held at Marquette’s Tourist Park. On Saturday, August 3, over 30 new and antique wooden canoes will be assembled for viewing and appraisal. Included will be birch bark, laminate and wood canvas canoes, all hand made. Some will be over 100 years old, lovingly restored; others will be recent constructions. Demonstrations of skills used in the manufacture and handling of the canoes will take place throughout the day. Included will be birch bark and wood/canvas canoe building, building a willow frame coracle, carving paddles, blacksmithing and paddling demonstrations. The Assembly opens at 10:00 AM and concludes with a Parade of Canoes at the Tourist Park Beach at 7:30 PM. The public is invited and entrance is FREE.
