Anyone who lives in Delta County knows that one of our greatest assets is our people. We see it every day, with generous support of fundraisers, thankful letters to the community from stranded travelers and the strangers who helped them and countless other random acts of kindness. It is the people of this community that make our area so great and as we prepare for the Esky 150 celebration, we are anxious to host a half marathon for the first time in recent history.
While many area runners head off to other places to run 13.1 miles, a race of this type has not been seen in our area, which is why we are offering a few tips to our community, in hopes of seeing great support and sportsmanship along the race route.
The Heritage Half Marathon will kick off in Van Cleve Park on Saturday, July 6th at 7:30 a.m. Participants will run along the lakeshore including U.S. 2 & 41 M-35 turning by the Buck Inn , along Sheri dan Road , through downtown and finishing in Ludington Park .
Spectators are encouraged along the entire course, please be cautious and respectful of runners safety while driving. We hope that we will see a route lined with cheering sections and great signs of encouragement. In addition, those residents or businesses who might be along the route, anyone who is willing to put out a sprinkler should the weather be warm, is encouraged to do so.
The Heritage Half committee is also asking residents and businesses to limit parking on the north side parking slots of Ludington Street from the 18th Block at 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The first group of runners should enter Ludington Street by 8:30 a.m. and the last group is expected to enter at around 9:45 a.m.
“We are hoping to have the north side parking slots available and open for the runners to pass through. We would greatly appreciate it if businesses encourage their patrons to use alternative parking spaces,” explain Gina Zanon, Race Director.
Currently there are over 225 runners registered, registration is still open and is $80 for an individual or $280 for a team, increasing on June 7 to $85 and $300 respectively.
