Marquette Township’s National Trails Day at Schwemwood Park on Saturday, June 1

Marquette Township would like to invite area residents, businesses and organizations to celebrate National Trails Day on Saturday, June 1, 2013 from 11 AM – 2 PM. Our Township event will take place
at Schwemwood Park and will feature information on conceptual plans to develop the Township’s newly acquired 4.75 acre parcel of property located along the Iron Ore Heritage Trail (off of County
Road 492, south of WalMart). Light refreshments will also be available.

Thanks to a grant from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund (MNRTF) and supporting contributions from local residents, businesses and organizations, Marquette Township acquired the 4.75
acre parcel of property that is adjacent to both the Iron Ore Heritage Trail and the existing Schwemwood Park property (see attached conceptual plan map and donor sign).

Since the acquisition of the property in the spring of this year, the Recreation Committee has been working with the Iron Ore Heritage Recreation Authority to draft a conceptual plan for the development a of proper trailhead on the property. Proposed site amenities include standard Iron Ore Heritage Trailhead signage and markings, restrooms, improved parking, improvement of existing trails,
drinking fountain, picnic tables, bike racks, benches, and maps denoting access to the commercial business corridor.

Funding of the project is proposed to be through a combination of public and private partnerships, fundraisers and a MNRTF Development Grant application. Depending upon funding opportunities, it
may also become a phased project; with certain amenities being constructed with priority.

We would like to take the opportunity to thank all those who have supported the project, by installing a permanent sign that recognizes the stewardship of those who have contributed to the property acquisition. We would also like to promote opportunities to get involved in the future development of the site, as well as recognizing the continued importance of trail development in our community.
