LANSING— The Michigan Humanities Council invites all nonprofit and for-profit organizations and companies to participate in a statewide literary discussion by registering for the 2013-14 Great Michigan Read. Registration opens May 15 at www.michiganhumanities.org and will remain open through January.
All registered partners can sign up to receive free supplemental materials such as reader’s guides, teacher’s guides and bookmarks. Select nonprofits are eligible to receive up to 30 free copies of the book. Special attention will be given to those with a plan to re-circulate the books after use.
The Great Michigan Read is a free, biennial program that aims to connect all Michiganians by exploring our past, present and future as discussed in a single literary title. This year, we explore mental illness, family secrets, immigration and genealogy with Annie’s Ghosts, written by Detroit native and Washington Post Associate Editor Steve Luxenberg.
Annie’s Ghosts is part memoir, part detective story and part history. Employing his skills as a journalist while struggling to maintain his empathy as a son, Luxenberg pieces together the story of his mother’s motivations, his aunt’s unknown life, and the times in which they lived. His search takes him to imperial Russia and Depression-era Detroit, through the Holocaust in Ukraine and the Philippine war zone, and back to the hospitals where Annie and many others languished in anonymity.
