City of Marquette Arts and Culture Center and the Lake Superior Art Association present new gallery exhibition: Superiorland Woodturners
The City of Marquette Arts and Culture and the Lake Superior Art Association are proud to present the new gallery exhibition, Superiorland Woodturners. This exhibition will show from October 3rd, 2012 through November 27th, 2012. There will be an opening gallery exhibition reception on the evening of Thursday October 4th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Also on Monday November 5, 2012 woodturner Norm Hefke will be giving a free demonstration from 7:00-8:00 p.m.
The Superiorland Woodturners Club was created in 2006 by woodturners Norm Hefke, Dennis Bell, Marc Himes and Eric Poirier. It currently has over 30 members throughout the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Passing on the knowledge of woodturning is the main focus of the club as is the American Association of Woodturners (AAW) of which they are a chapter. Featured in the upcoming show will be a broad range of shapes, finishes, and projects from bottle stoppers and pens to bowls, platters and wall hangings.
These pieces are done by turners with levels of experience ranging from very beginners to professionals who have been turning for many years. The wood turning process involves attaching wood to a lathe and spinning it at 300-2000 rpm while using various gouges or chisels to remove the excess wood. “Start with a chunk of wood and remove everything that isn’t a bowl,” states project director Marc Himes. Surrounded by the forest, Mr. Himes goes on to explain why woodturning may be so popular here in the Upper Peninsula. ‘There are many beautiful types of wood available to us here in the UP. Hard and soft maple with bird’s eye and curly variants are easily obtained as well as other species such as cherry, yellow and white birch, as well as oak, ash and box elder. Many of these trees produce burls, abnormal growths on the sides of trees, which have very interesting grain patterns and are prized by woodworkers in general but by wood turners in particular.’
Artists represented in the show will include Dennis Bell, Bill Brazier, Gary Brown, Richard Hartwig, Norm Hefke, John Hemmila, Marc Himes, Matt Hirvonen, Jerry Jarvis, Jim Maki, Don Perrow, Steve Schlumpf, Gary Schmidt, Wendel Suckow, Daryl Thurston, Dwight VanSickle, Steve Walden, Kevin Wendt, and Bill Wiard. For more information on the club visit their website at: http://superiorland.woodturnersamerica.com. Superiorland Woodturners Member Show will be on display at the Marquette Arts and Culture Center Gallery on the lower level of the Peter White Library. The exhibit will show from October 3rd, 2012 through November 27th, 2012 with a public reception for the artists in the Art Center Gallery on Thursday, October 4th 2012 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. For more information please call the City of Marquette Arts and Culture Center at 906-228-0472 or email arts-culture@mqtcty.org
