Ishpeming, MI—August 24,, 2012 —Cliffs Natural Resources, (NYSE: CLF) (Paris: CLF) today announced that an electrical failure at the main substation at the Empire Mine occurred resulting in loss of electrical power to the Empire mining area and plant. There were no injuries. A small fire as a result of the electrical failure was responded to by Richmond Township Fire Department.
The cause of the electrical failure is not known at this time and is under investigation. There was no loss of pellet production at Empire as the plant was in a planned shutdown.
The Tilden Mine and processing facilities were not affected and are currently operating as scheduled.
