Our Boys in Blue from Marquette County

Learn about Marquette County residents who served in the Civil War over 150 years ago on Tuesday, April 10 at 7:00 pm in the Peter White Public Library Community Room. The Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War will present information on local residents who served in the Union Army between 1861and 1865.

Presenters Judy Conrad, Jeffrey Carlson, Alan Nelson and Gary White are affiliated with Albert and James Lyon Camp No. 266 of the Upper Peninsula chapter of the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War. They will showcase their research on Marquette County residents who fought for the North during the War Between the States. Fifty one Union Veterans are currently acknowledged and research is ongoing to find more. Albert T. Jackson was one of these veterans and his remains are buried in Marquette’s Park Cemetery.

The Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War is a successor organization to the Grand Army of the Republic which was the largest Civil War veterans organization until the death of the last Union soldier. The Sons of the Union Veterans goal is to perpetuate the memory of the men who fought to abolish slavery and foster patriotism, duties of citizenship, and a greater understanding of U.S. history. The group was granted its charter by the U.S. Congress in 1954 for that purpose.

The Albert and James Lyon Camp No. 266 is named in memory of veterans James F. Lyon and his brother Albert Lyon. James Lyon was the last living veteran of the Grand Army of the Republic until his death in 1946. The local group is working towards construction of a memorial to honor Marquette County Civil War Veterans.

For more information on the program call the Peter White Public Library at 226-4318 or visit www.pwpl.info.
