Marquette Symphony Orchestra May 5th

Marquette, MI –  The Marquette Symphony Orchestra warmly invites the community to join in celebrating classical music at their May 5, 2012 concert, “Music of the Ages.” The Marquette Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Conductor Dr. Jacob Chi, will present Mozart’s “Overture to Idomeneo,” Haydn’s “Symphony No. 94,” and Mahler’s “Symphony No. 1.”

“Idomeneo” is Italian for “King of Crete,” the island where this story is set. Mozart composed the libretto in 1780 and combined French and Italian opera composition styles. Haydn’s “Symphony No. 94” is most commonly recognized as Haydn’s “Surprise Symphony” (for good reason, as attendees will find out) and has been very popular since its debut in 1792. Mahler self-described his “Symphony No. 1” as “like a sound of nature,” while critics respond by calling it “the Titan;” originally composed in 1888, Mahler continued making revisions to the symphony until 1907.

Prior to the 7:30 p.m. concert, a pre-concert dinner will be held in the Sky Room of the Landmark Inn. The dinner features commentary by Dr. Chi about the evening’s musical selections. Tickets are limited for the pre-concert dinner; please call (906) 228-0472 to make a reservation.

“Music of the Ages” will be held at Kaufman Auditorium. All concert attendees are invited to an afterglow celebration immediately following the concert at the Upper Peninsula Children’s Museum. Ticket prices for the evening concert are $27.00 for adults, $12.00 for students and $9.00 for children 12 and under. Concert tickets may be purchased at any NMU EZ Ticket Outlet (NMU Bookstore, Superior Dome, and Forest Roberts Theatre) as well as www.nmu.edu/tickets <http://www.nmu.edu/Tickets> or by phone at (906) 227-1032.
