August 2, 2011 – Women from across the U.P. will have the opportunity to come together for a day designed especially for them. “Women of Hidden Strength!” – a Catholic women’s conference – is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 1 from 9 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. ET at St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette.
Open to both Catholics and non-Catholics, it will “bring Catholic and other interested women of faith together to provide an opportunity for spiritual growth and strengthening,” said Lynn Bertucci, one of the organizers. She said to expect “some great talks by Bishop Alexander Sample, Therese Cirner and Judith Maten on different aspects of being a woman of faith in today’s culture along with ways to glorify God in our everyday lives.”
Bishop Sample will talk on “The Dignity of the Daughters of God,” and Cirner, a licensed clinical counselor and adjunct professor at Franciscan University of Steubenville (Ohio), will speak about “The Genius of Women.” Maten, the director of evangelization and catechesis for the Archdiocese of Detroit, will give two talks, “The Imitation of Christ and St. Therese – Our Path to Holiness” and “The Vocation of Women and Transforming Society.” Maten holds a master’s degree in pastoral theology from Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit but began her career as a chemical engineer.
“I see this as an opportunity for women to come together for some fellowship, spiritual renewal, refreshment and to overcome any feelings of isolation that are easy to have in a large, predominantly rural diocese like ours,” said Colin Jenkins, director of the diocesan family life office. He added that conference attendees would bring renewal back home to their families, parishes and communities.
Bertucci called it “a chance to meet and share fellowship with other women looking to deepen and enrich their spiritual lives.”
Coordinated by the diocesan family life office, the conference is an outgrowth of last year’s diocesan men’s conference. Jenkins said the successful event generated much interest in developing something similar to meet women’s needs. Along with Bertucci, the conference planning group includes Barbara White and Jennifer Branson.
The conference is scheduled to begin with registration at 9 a.m. and conclude with the 4 p.m. (all times Eastern) Saturday Vigil Mass at St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette, attendance at which will fulfill the Sunday obligation for Catholics. A lunch will be provided and there will be opportunities for confession.
Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door. For more information, or to order tickets, contact Jenkins at 906-227-9178 / 800-562-9745 ext. 178 or cjenkins@dioceseofmarquette.org.
