Republic – The Republic Area Historical Society will conduct a dedication ceremony on Saturday, June 11 at 2 p.m. at Munson Park in downtown north Republic.
The event is the final activity of the society’s 2009 theme featuring the history of the Republic Open Pit Iron Mine, which operated from 1954 through 1982. During its operation eight miners lost their lives as a result of accidents at the facility.
A short program has been prepared, the centerpiece of which is the unveiling and dedication of a bronze memorial which gives tribute to each of the eight miners by name: Lawrence A. LaFave, Robert E. Bengtson, Norman S. Korpi, Ronald W. Polkki, Melvin L. Roberts, John Hedko Jr., Robert W. Mattson and Robert J. LaMere.
Light snacks and refreshments will be served following the program. For more information, call LaVerne Antilla at 376-2285.
