Marquette – Area residents are asked to turn off their outdoor lights on Saturday, March 26 from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. in observance of Earth Hour, a worldwide collective display of commitment to protect the one thing that unites us all – the planet.
In conjunction with Earth Hour, the Marquette Astronomical Society will sponsor a lights-out hour at Mattson Park in Marquette. The park lights and the lights along Lake Shore Boulevard will be turned off, offering attendees an opportunity to see the improvement shielded lights would provide for night viewers at the park.
If the sky is clear, astronomy club members will point out stars that can be seen when the lights are out as compared to when the lights are on. Members also will distribute material illustrating proper and safe residential and commercial lighting.
