Marquette – A Breakfast and Conversation with environmental activist, advocate for children’s health and Nobel Prize nominee Lois Gibbs will be held Friday, October 15 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at The Waterfront, located above the L’Attitude restaurant in Marquette.

Gibbs was a 27-year-old housewife when she learned that her child was attending an elementary school built on top of a 20,000 ton toxic chemical dump in Niagara Falls, N.Y. She rallied her neighbors to form the Love Canal Homeowners Association and fought for more than two years for relocation of the families of Love Canal. In October 1980, President Jimmy Carter delivered an emergency declaration that moved 900 families from this hazardous area and signified victory for the grassroots community. Gibbs is now the executive director of the Center for Health, Environment and Justice, which has assisted more than 10,000 grassroots groups with organizing, technical and general information nationwide.
