Black Rocks might sound like something out of pirate movie but to the local teens and adults of Marquette, Michigan and surrounding communities, its a source of refreshing entertainment and scenic beauty on a hot summer day.The swimming hole is located at Presque Isle Park in Marquette, Michigan on the shore of Lake Superior.
On an average hot summer day, about 30-40 thrill seekers visit the popular swimming hole, but once the students of Northern Michigan University come back to school it can increase to about 150 per day.
The swimming hole is a “swim at you own risk” spot with no life guards. It can be fairly dangerous since most of the swimmers opt to jump off one of the many spots along the edge of the rocks. Most swimmers jump off feet first but some of the more talented ones do flips and turns. Hitting bottom isn't a concern as the water averages at least 15 feet deep in the cove. One of the deterrents of swimming at Black Rocks can be the temperature of the water. Depending on which way the wind is blowing and how hot the summer has been can make for some pretty chilly water temperatures and this year hasn't been to warm. The climb back up isn't easy either as some of the spots are as high as 20 feet. Some people have to swim farther down the cove to get back up because it can be pretty difficult to climb back up towards the front of the rocks.
“How's the water” asked 14 year-old Brandon Jarvinen and 15 year-old Chad Voet to some of the NMU students swimming in the cove on August 12, 2008. When the boys heard that the water wasn't too cold, they immediately tore off their shirts and jumped feet first into the water. The boys have been swimming regularly at Black Rocks for the past three years.
