The Republic-Michigamme Hawks boys varsity basketball team lost its home opener to the Bark River-Harris Broncos by a score of 94-14 on December 8, 2008.
It was apparent that new head boys varsity basketball coach, Rick Wertanen, had his hands full when the Bark River-Harris Broncos came to town on Monday, December 8th. Fielding a team was hard enough for this small community. Add in the fact that there were no seniors, one junior, five sophomores, three freshmen and the fact that some of them had never played a sport before wasn't going to make his new job any easier.
The Hawks inexperience would show very early in the game as they gave up several turnovers in paint. The much taller, stronger, older and more experienced Broncos got off to a 33-0 start in the first quarter.
Both the home and away fans roared to life as Zach Mattson scored the Hawks first basket on a turnover followed by a lay-up late in the second quarter. The first half would close with the Broncos up by a score of 59-2.
By the start of the fourth quarter the Broncos had pulled all of their starters. An exhausted Hawk team would eventually muster up a late surge late in the fourth quarter by Cody Wertanen and Nathan Jarvi to close out the game with a score of 94-14.
Point guard, Nathan Jarvi, was happy with the way the team played despite the circumstances. “I was very happy with the way the young guys played. They never gave up and did their best. We know we have a lot of hard work ahead of us.” said Jarvi.
