The Marquette Senior High School Redmen hockey team defeated the Negaunee Miners by a score of 9-1 on Thursday, December 4, 2008 at Lakeview Arena in Marquette, Michigan.
For some returning Marquette Redmen hockey players, the State Championship banner raising ceremony was a time to reflect on an incredible journey that resulted in several historical moments for their team. This highly emotional start for the Redmen might have been the reason why the game started out the way it did.
For the first period, it was anyone's game. Negaunee matched the intensity of Marquette and capitalized on their mistakes. The first period ended tied at 1-1.
Head coach Joe Papin and assistant coach, Mike L'Huillier must have had a good pep talk in the locker room during the intermission because the Redmen really turned up the intensity in the second and third periods. The Redmen scored 8 unanswered goals to force the game to be stopped with 4:26 left in the third period.
