ISHPEMING, Mich. — A coalition of local residents and business owners today announced the creation of a new Christmas market coming to downtown Ishpeming in 2026.
The Ishpeming Kriskindlmarkt is inspired by traditional European holiday markets and similar events found in larger Midwestern cities. It will be the first Christmas market of its kind in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
Organizers plan to host a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the inaugural season on Friday, November 27, 2026. The market will run for two consecutive weekends and will be located in the parking lot of The Mather in historic downtown Ishpeming.
The public can get a preview of the Kriskindlmarkt experience during the current holiday season. One of the wooden vendor huts planned for the market is now on display at the intersection of Cleveland Avenue and Main Street. The hut will host hot chocolate and cookies for sale from Doozers during Ishpeming’s Santa Village, from 5:00–7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 18.
The hut was designed and built by Northern Michigan University Construction Management seniors. The Kriskindlmarkt steering committee is actively raising funds to construct 20 or more huts in advance of the 2026 market season.
The Ishpeming Kriskindlmarkt is currently seeking vendors and sponsors interested in being part of this unique new holiday experience. Additional information and updates can be found on the event’s Facebook page by searching www.facebook.com/IshKindl
