FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Limestone Financial Credit Union (Limestone FCU) recently partnered with Newberry High School to host a Financial Reality Fair, with support from the Michigan Credit Union Foundation, providing students with a hands-on opportunity to navigate real-world financial decisions. Approximately 91 students participated from Newberry High School in this interactive event, designed to teach budgeting, smart spending habits, and the importance of Financial Reality Fairs.
During the fair, students stepped into the role of working professionals, selecting careers and managing monthly expenses, including housing, transportation, groceries, entertainment, and more. The goal was to create a balanced budget while dealing with unexpected financial challenges, mirroring real-life financial responsibilities.
“Collaborating with our fellow credit unions to bring Financial Reality Fairs to the communities we serve reflects the true spirit of the credit union movement — people helping people. By working together, we’re able to deliver impactful, hands-on financial education to the students of Newberry High in a way that’s both engaging and relevant. These events don’t just teach budgeting skills — they spark real conversations about financial responsibility and future planning. We’re proud to be part of a cooperative effort that invests in the financial wellbeing of the next generation. ” — Jennifer C. Watson, CEO
Student feedback underscored the meaningful impact of the Financial Reality Fair. Many students walked away with a better understanding of how to manage their money, especially during the summer months when they begin earning income. Comments included, “It will help me manage the money I earn during the summer,” and “This will help me acquire a car this summer.” Others shared a renewed focus on budgeting and savings, noting takeaways such as “It will help me stay on a budget and keep my money on track” and “I’ll be smart with my money.” Several students expressed that the fair helped them think about prioritizing needs over wants, emergency savings, and future financial goals. While a few students felt confident in their current financial knowledge, many left with actionable insights to apply in their everyday lives.
“We are thankful to Limestone Financial Credit Union and volunteers from Tahquamenon Area Credit Union, MSU Extension and LP for providing this great event. The students learned a lot about budgeting and finances and enjoyed participating; we look forward to continuing this opportunity in the future!”
