A Reminder to Drive Safe this Time of Year!

The winter weather is here! That means road conditions can be hazardous this time of year.

Record travel numbers spiked over Thanksgiving, about 2.6 million Michigan residents to be exact! On the downside of this, there were many accidents as well. The road conditions were pretty rough Friday through Sunday.

State Police responded to a pair of accidents Sunday afternoon on US-2 in Schoolcraft County. Few details of the accidents are known at this time, but both accidents closed down portions of US-2 as the scenes were cleared. Reports say one of the accidents involved multiple vehicles. There is no word on any injuries and no names have been released. Troopers also responded to an accident on US-2 Saturday afternoon that closed a section of the highway as well. Wintry weather and poor road conditions were factors in all crashes, and State Police are encouraging drivers to continue to use caution today after the weekend’s heavy snowfall in portions of the U.P. and northern Lower Michigan.

Traveling across much of the northern half of the U.P. may become hazardous later today as a Winter Storm Warning has been posted for the region. The National Weather Service in Negaunee Township says the warning runs from 1:00PM today through 7:00PM tomorrow. Heavy snow is expected with total accumulations of up to 12 inches in Marquette County with wind gusting as high as 50 mph. Widespread blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility and the gusty winds could cause power outages.

This is a reminder for the Upper Peninsula to please drive safe and smart this winter. Your life is worth more than trying to race time.
