Winter Light Festival to Illuminate Marquette with Art, Community, and Celebration!
The Marquette community is gearing up for the first ever Winter Light Festival, a month-long celebration of art, light, and holiday spirit that runs from December 1st to December 31st, 2024. From illuminated art installations to live performances and creative gatherings, the festival promises to be a celebration of connection, showcasing the warmth and vibrancy of Marquette during the darkest month of the year. The Winter Light Festival offers an array of events and illuminated displays for both locals and visitors.
Holiday Lasers on the Ore Dock- Returning to Marquette will be the Holiday Lasers on the Ore Dock, a popular projection display sponsored by Travel Marquette and produced by Fresh Coast Light Lab. Projection will occur November 28th through December 28th, Thursday through Saturday from 6:00PM to 8:00PM.
Oscillation- New to Marquette, the Marquette Public Art Commission introduces Oscillation, and innovative interactive installation by The Urban Conga that blends light, sound, and movement. This temporary public art installation invites participants to engage with the artwork, generating real-time light and sound patterns in response to movement. Invoking a sense of play from all ages and abilities, Oscillation will be located at the Marquette Commons from December 10th until January 5th, 2025. This installation will be illuminated from 7:00AM to 10:00PM everyday, making it a unique centerpiece of creativity and community during the festival.
Holiday Parade & City Tree Lighting- Other highlights include the Holiday Parade and City Tree Lighting which will both take place on December 13th. The DDA’s Yule Market will take place on December 13th and December 14th. The new Yule Market will feature local artisans and vendors offering holiday goods and handcrafted items, perfect for holiday shopping!
The Winter Light Festival will conclude with a grand finale celebration on New Year’s Eve in downtown Marquette, ensuring the year ends on a note of brilliance and joy.
Community members are encouraged to join the celebration by hosting their own winter events. Those interested can submit their winter-light event details here to be included in the official festival lineup. Inspired by the theme of “Winter Light” — all events much be open to the public and community-oriented. (Promotions or sales should be secondary to the community nature of the event.)
This festival is presented by the Marquette Downtown Development Authority, Travel Marquette, and the City of Marquette. The installation Oscillation was brought to Marquette by the Marquette Public Art Commission, with support from Travel Marquette and the DDA. It is created by The Urban Conga, and award-winning multidisciplinary design studio focused on sparking community interaction and social activity through open-ended play. It is tour produced by Creos, an industry leader in the field of interactive installations and an active liaison between managers, developers, creators, and distributors of public art around the world!
