Update On Line 5 Tunnel In Mackinaw Straits

Michigan

Recently, the United States Army Corps of Engineers announced they are narrowing the scope of their environmental review process for the Enbridge Line 5 oil tunnel. This means that The Army Corps is discounting the Wisconsin reroute. Instead they are only considering alternatives that deliver oil across the Straits of Mackinac. This limits their scope of review to ignore climate considerations and forgo an independent analysis of the construction and planning. The Line 5 oil tunnel actively contradicts ongoing national and state commitments to fighting the climate crisis. This pipeline is 70 years old in 2023.

As Michiganders, citizens of the Great Lakes State, we have a responsibility to prioritize thoughts on what happens in and around our treasured fresh water resources. It is important that all of us Michiganders take the responsibility of staying up to date on the state of our Great Lakes. If you’d like, go and take a look at the “Oil and Water Don’t Mix” website. Read some of their news and then, compare that information with content found on Enbridge’s website, The EPA’s Record of Enbridge Oil Spills and the Army Corps of Engineers’ website. By doing this bare minimum research on our own, we all can develop our own well-rounded opinions that are based off of real content and not feelings. A ton of the resources are tagged in this post for you, the reader, to research.
