Sault Tribe seeks Consent Decree extension to allow for more negotiation on Great Lakes fisheries

Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. – With the deadline for a new consent decree that will govern  the state and tribes’ joint management of Great Lakes fisheries quickly approaching, the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians filed a motion in federal court to extend the current decree beyond its Sept. 30 expiration date to Dec. 29 of this year.

“Fishing has been a way of life for indigenous people in Michigan since time immemorial. The Sault Tribe is committed to ensuring that Great Lakes fisheries are managed with sound biological considerations so that the interests of both recreational and commercial fishers are balanced,” said Josh Hovey, spokesperson for the Sault Tribe. “Tribal leaders have been negotiating in good faith with the state of Michigan to reach an agreement that is fair for all parties.”

By granting the Consent Decree extension, the court will give more time for all parties to return to the negotiating table to reach a final agreement.
