MI Iron Industry Museum presents film “A Vanishing Breed” April 16, 2022

MI Iron Industry Museum presents film “A Vanishing Breed” April 16, 2022 at 1pm. “A Vanishing Breed” is about the men and memories of those who worked at the Mather B Mine in Negaunee. There is also no admission fee and it is going to be at the Michigan Iron Industry Museum at 73 Forge Road, Negaunee, Michigan.

ln 1947 the Mather “B” mine began operations. Located on the hill overlooking Teal Lake in
Negaunee, in its lifetime, it would become the most productive underground iron mine the
world has ever seen.
42 million tons of iron ore were excavated from the Mather “B.” lt reached a depth of more
than 3300 feet at its lowest point the 12th level.
When it ceased operations on July 21, 1979, it marked the end of an era in the region. The
“8” was the last of the underground mines on the Marquette Range. Many of the men
working in the mine had spent their entire careers underground. Some retired and many
more were relocated to the open pit mines in the area. For those who had never spent time
underground, the experiences would be difficult to understand, to say the least.
This documentary, written and produced by students at Negaunee High School, features
interviews with a number of Mather B veterans. They discuss what life was like
underground and share stories some funny and others frightening – many hard to believe.
This is a story of a mine, but more accurately a story about men the last of the
underground miners. A Vanishing Breed.
