A movement in the state legislature to ban dog track racing was poised to also prohibit dog sled racing, while mushers prepared for the UP200 last week. As introduced, Senate Bill 626 states, “a person shall not hold, conduct or operate dog racing for public exhibition.”Sen. Valde Garcia, (R) Howell, reportedly got visits from both Sen. Mike Prusi,(D) Ishpeming and Rep. Steve Lindberg, (D) Marquette about the proposal. Garcia made a friendly amendment to his bill, which now is tagged with the line, “for the purpose of gambling.”The measure passed unanimously in the Senate. It now heads to the House chamber.
