By Pete MackinMARQUETTE – Department of Natural Resources administrators are cutting vital wildlife, fisheries and forestry programs vital to game species, while taking revenues generated by hunting and fishing license fees and using them for non-game species and programs – according to the Upper Peninsula Sportsman's Alliance. The UPSA took aim at the DNR at a Feb. 16th Michigan Natural Resource Users Rally in Marquette. UPSA President Dale McNamee, who also serves as state Rep. Tom Casperson's aide, chided DNR officials for advocating a “pre-settlement” land use and management strategy and cited several program cuts, land use recommendations and other reports as proof.McNamee also noted that the DNR has been pushing highland conifers over early succession forests – while highland conifers provide thermal cover, they don't have as much food value for deer, while aspen forests are crucial deer habitat.
