SAULT STE. MARIE – A 120-year-old land claim dispute between the Federal Government and the Sault Ste. Marie and Bay Mills tribes may be finally coming to a settlement. The U.S. House Resource Committee recently approved – by a 22 to 5 vote – to send a settlement bill to the floor of the House. It is on the 110th Congress calendar of business, but there is no indication yet when the bill could come up for a vote. “We are grateful to the U.S. House Resources Committee and to the bipartisan group of Michigan governors and members of Congress who have worked toward this historic vote approving a just and reasonable settlement to our valid land claim,” said Aaron Payment, chair of the Sault Tribe. “This marks the first step in correcting a 120-year-old illegal land taking from ancestors of the Sault Tribe.” Great Lakes Radio's Pete Mackin spoke with Sault Tribe spokesman Cory Wilson.
