MRHC presents new display: “Goose Lake Findings First Contact Between Two Cultures” January 18, 2021

Marquette Regional History Center has recently opened a new display: “Goose Lake Findings First Contact Between Two Cultures.”
This permanent display shows five Jesuit or iconographic rings and some of the many artifacts, dating to the 1630s at the Goose Lake outlet in Marquette County. The site was used as a campsite for hunting and butchering moose in the winter. Animal bones, stone tools, metal trade artifacts and glass beads were all found there and help date this site as one of the earliest sites of contact in the entire western and upper Great Lakes region. Several areas were professionally excavated in 2012 and 2013 following Jim Paquette’s initial discovery of several Jesuit rings. Pictured: Dr. John Anderton at Goose Lake
The MRHC is currently open and following safety protocols. Call 906.226.3571 or visit marquettehistory.org for more info.
