IRON MOUNTAIN – The Iron Mountain VA Medical Center will host its 4th Annual Veteran Creative Arts Competition March 6, 2020. All entries will be judged then displayed in room 5150 at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center from 10:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. The public is welcome to come view the displays. The VA uses the creative arts as one form of rehabilitative treatment to help Veterans in the healing and recovery process.
Veterans enrolled in VA healthcare first compete in a local creative arts competition sponsored by the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center. Local submissions that place first will advance to the national competition. In the past two years Iron Mountain VA veterans won second place nationally in their respective categories.
In 2018, Dan Huffman, a Vietnam War Veteran, won first place at the local Creative Arts Competition qualifying him for the national competition. Huffman’s drawing, titled My Brain on PTSD, was one of 17 entries by 12 Veterans who submitted for the local competition under various subcategories in visual arts, creative writing, and performing arts.
A photo entry called Dream, submitted by Army Veteran Jesse Christian, was selected locally as a winner in 2019. “I’m kind of an introvert, and this allows me to express myself,” said Christian. “Being selected made me feel validated as an artist.”
Last year there were 51 entries by 21 Veterans, and this year there are 40 entries by 21 Veterans.
