Peters Submits More Than 24,000 Signatures to File For 2020 Ballot
All Volunteer Effort Collected Signatures From Every State House and State Senate District, And All 83 Counties in Michigan
Today, U.S. Senator Gary Peters’ campaign submitted more than 24,000 signatures, collected by hundreds of volunteers, to officially place him on the ballot for re-election in 2020.
“Thank you to the hundreds of volunteers from all across the state who have joined our campaign to make sure we keep delivering for people of Michigan,” said Peters. “Our campaign is already harnessing this grassroots momentum to build an organization that will set us up for success in November. Michiganders want leaders who work hard and get things done, and as one of the most effective and bipartisan members of the Senate, that’s exactly what I’m going to keep doing.”
The filing demonstrates Peters’ strong organization and widespread support in all parts of the state. The campaign gathered signatures from every State House and State Senate district, and in all 83 counties in Michigan. It also far exceeded the requirement of 100 signatures from at least seven Congressional districts, gathering more than four times that amount from every Congressional district in the state.
Gary has devoted much of his life to serving others. He served as a Lieutenant Commander and was a qualified Seabee combat warfare specialist in the U.S. Navy Reserve. Soon after the September 11th attacks, Peters volunteered to serve again. Gary has lived his entire life in Michigan and is a fifth-generation resident of Oakland County.
Even though he’s just in his first term in the Senate, Gary was named one of the most effective and bipartisan Democratic Senators by non-partisan organizations.
Gary has delivered on key issues critical to Michigan. As Ranking Member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and a member of the Armed Services Committee, he has made national security and border security a top priority with the passage of key security bills, led efforts to boost Michigan’s defense sector, and led successful efforts to expand skills training programs and apprenticeship opportunities, including for veterans. Gary is protecting our Great Lakes and addressing the PFAS crisis. He secured the first ever funding increase for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, and passed a provision to transition the Department of Defense away from using PFAS chemicals in firefighting foam. Gary is also standing up for protections for Michiganders with preexisting health conditions and working to lower prescription drug costs.
