Marquette, MI – With three casts including over 70 local youth performers, Superior Arts Youth Theater will present their second annual Play Festival at Northern Michigan University’s Forest Roberts Theatre and Panowski Black Box Theatre, May 3-5, 2019.
The first production in the festival is an adaptation of the classic German folk tale Hansel and Gretel directed by Nathan Morgan, which follows the brother and sister lost in the forest after their trail of breadcrumbs disappears. Sent into a deep sleep by the Sandman and Angel, the two are visited by dwarves, elves, and other mysterious creatures. Awakening only to wander into the candy house of the Witch, the pair must use their wits to escape. The fun and very sweet adventures of Hansel and Gretel will be presented on Friday, May 3 at NMU’s Forest Roberts Theatre.
Three performances of William Shakespeare’s As You Like It directed by Teagan Sturmer will be performed in NMU’s Panowski Black Box Theatre. Rosalind, betrayed by her evil aunt, is forced to disguise herself as a young man and flee the kingdom with her cousin, Celia, and the court jester, Touchstone. The trio find refuge in the Forest of Arden where they encounter all sorts of colorful characters; Phoebe and Audrey, two larger-than-life shepherdesses, Jaques, a sad and cynical gentleman, and Orlando, Rosalind’s true love. Through wit and humor, she is able to win the heart of Orlando and is delivered from her evil aunt.
The third and final production of the festival, Brave Little Tailor directed by Taylor Koski, will be presented Sunday, May 5 at NMU’s Forest Roberts Theatre. This play begins when Chris climbs into his Grandmother’s attic, plays a magical ocarina, and a mysterious storyteller with spirits and elves appear. The Storyteller sends Chris (and his trusty cat Keara) into the fable as the little tailor himself. Along the way he encounters a not-so-bright giant, the royal court, two vain dragons, a mysterious unicorn, and the dreaded Swamp Monster.
Hansel and Gretel will be presented at 7 p.m. Friday, May 3 at the Forest Roberts Theatre. As You Like It will be presented at 3 p.m and 7 p.m. Saturday, May 4 and 3 p.m. Sunday, May 5 at the Panowski Black Box Theatre.
