Anderton’s Earth Week Begins at NMU

Marquette, MI – Northern Michigan University is celebrating its fifth annual Anderton’s Earth Week April 15-19. Several activities are planned to honor John Anderton, a former geography professor and department head who passed away unexpectedly in March 2014. Students from NMU’s Gamma Theta Upsilon International Geographical Honor Society planned the events, all of which are free and open to the public.

An art installation will be displayed in the Jamrich Hall lobby outside room 1100 from 11 am to 2 pm each day. Here is the remaining schedule:

Monday, April 15:

-Screening of the film Wasteland, Whitman Commons, noon

-Brad Neumann and Mary Martin address land management and off-grid living, 6 p.m. in West Science 3710

-Film Food for Change, 7 p.m., West Science 3710

Tuesday, April 16:

-Rochelle Dale will present on water preservation, 5 p.m., West Science 3710

-Geography Trivia Night, 5:30 p.m., West Science 3710

-Sigma Xi and Jes Thompson will address “Changing the Climate Conversation,” 7:30 p.m., Jamrich 1100

Wednesday, April 17:

-Nancy Warren will discuss citizen involvement, 2 p.m., West Science 3710

-Kathleen Henry and Scott Jordan will present on eco-tourism and getting involved after graduation, 6:30 p.m., West Science 3710

Thursday, April 18:

-Rod Chimner will address carbon stocks in tropical peatland ecosystems, 9 a.m., Jamrich 1318

-Kristen Carlson will present on climate change, 6 p.m., West Science 3710

-Screening of the film Bluefin, 6:30 p.m., West Science 3710

Friday, April 19:

-Northern Climate Network presentation on local resiliency in the face of climate change, noon, Jamrich 1318

-Gisele Duehring will speak on the Ripley Power Plant, 6 p.m., West Science 3710

-Screening of the film Cheshire, Ohio, 6:30 p.m., West Science 3710
