Arvon Township School Raises Over $700 With ‘Read for Raptors’ Program

Marquette, MI – For the eleven Arvon Township School students, March was reading month – and also raptor month.  Arvon Township School is a remote elementary school in Baraga County and the 11 students make up the entire student body.  They, with the support of their teachers, decided to have some fun and raise money with a “Read for Raptors” program for one of their favorite non-profits, the Chocolay Raptor Center.  Each student recruited donors from family and friends who pledged to donate a certain amount for each page read or each minute spent reading.  The students kept track of their reading, and inspired by their goals of raising money to feed the birds raised over $700 in pledges.  After collecting from the donors, the students and their teachers went on a field trip to the Chocolay Raptor Center.  There they met with and interacted with all four ambassador birds: Merl the merlin, Rey the kestrel, Phoenix the peregrine falcon, and Erik the red-tailed hawk.  After the hour-long program, each student presented their envelope with the donations to the birds.

The Chocolay Raptor Center, and its ambassador birds, is very grateful to these hard-working and good-reading students for supporting our work.  The students not only honed their reading skills, but also learned how to interact with and support one of their favorite causes.  They visited the Raptor Center several years ago and this year decided to do more.  For more information, contact:
