Author/Prison Warden Presentation Oct. 6

Marquette – Tekla Dennison Miller, social activist and author of four books, including “The Warden Wore Pink, will speak on Tuesday, October 6 at 7 p.m. at the Peter White Public Library.

Miller will discuss her life as a prison warden, her 20-year career in corrections and her newest work of fiction, “Inevitable Sentences,” which takes place at the Big Bay lighthouse. She will sign books after the presentation.

Fresh Film Showing Oct. 5

Marquette – The film “Fresh” will be shown on Monday, October 5 at 7 p.m. in Jamrich Hall Room 102 at Northern Michigan University.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. There will be a discussion period after the film, and information on local food, farming and sustainability matters will be shared.

This film examines U.S. food issues from a fresh perspective, showing us what is wrong by highlighting what is being done right.

Admission free for students, $2 for the general public. This event is sponsored by the Marquette Food Co-op, with support from NMU's Environmental Science Organization and Students for Sustainable Living.

Afternoon Film Classic Oct. 5

The Peter White Public Library Afternoon Classic Films will screen “In The Heat of the Night” on Monday, October 5 at 1:30 p.m.

This taut thriller examines the strained relationship between a racist Southern cop and a black detective from Philadelphia, who are involved in the same murder case. The film was one of the first to explore the sensitive issue of the color line in the South.

Fire Prevention Week Kick-off Parade and Static Display Oct. 3

Marquette – The Marquette City Fire Department will host the 17th annual Fire Prevention Week Kick-Off Parade and Static Display on Saturday, October 3 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on West Bluff Street behind Harlow Park.

Equipment, vehicles and personnel from various fire departments in the county will be on hand. Prizes will be awarded and refreshments will be provided.

Marquette – The 8th Annual Upper Peninsula Association for the Education of Young Children Preschool Conference will be held on Saturday, October 10 from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. in the University Center at NMU.

Keynote speaker will be Jane Kitson, a.k.a. Mother Goose, presenting “Leap into Literacy,” a fast paced, user friendly format that is practical and fun.

Registration is $50 per person or $40 for current UPAEYC members.

Cliffs Autumn Classic Oct. 17

Ishpeming – The Cliffs Autumn Classic 5K and 10K Cross Country Run will be held on Saturday, October 17 at Suicide Bowl between Ishpeming and Negaunee on M-28.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The race begins at 10 a.m.
