Commemoration of the Armistice of November 11, 1918

Houghton, MINovember 7, 2018 – At 11 am on Sunday, November 11, the World War I & the Copper Country project will commemorate the Armistice of November 11, 1918 at the immersive trench constructed this fall at the corner of US-41 and MacInnes Drive. Guests, asked to gather by 10:50 am, will be welcomed with a bagpipe performance, and distribution of paper poppies—a symbol of remembrance. The commemoration begins at the 11th hour with synchronized bells that will ring for 30 seconds. The Michigan Tech Joint Color Guard of Air Force and Army ROTC cadets will present the colors. The program also includes a 21-gun salute by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Copper Ingot Post 4624 of Lake Linden-Hubbell and “Taps” played by local students. Laughing Whitefish Audubon Society Membership Meeting

VA Vet Center Open House Celebrating Veterans Day

Escanaba, MINovember 5, 2018 – The VA Vet Center in Escanaba, Michigan will be holding an open house to celebrate Veterans Day on Monday, November 12, 2018, from 12  to 6 pm ET. The Vet Center is located at 3500 Ludington Street in Escanaba.

The Escanaba Vet Center welcomes Veterans, their families and friends and the general public to come for a tour of the Vet Center as well as a time of fellowship and reflection this Veterans Day. In addition, free flu shots will be provided to Veterans. No appointment is needed for the flu shots.

The Escanaba Vet Center offers free readjustment counseling services for combat veterans of all era’s and their family members, along with any service members who experienced military sexual trauma.

Read Between the Wines November Fundraiser

Marquette, MINovember 1, 2018 – The Marquette Regional History Center and Literacy Legacy Fund of Michigan are holding a wine tasting Thursday November 8th, 2018, 5:30 to 7:30 PM. It will be at the History Center at 145 W. Spring Street in Marquette. Tickets are $35 and available now. This is a collaborative fundraiser to support literacy and local history.
Everyday Wines will provide expertise and a thoughtful wine selection to sample. Wines will playfully reflect the uncommon bonds Marquette County local history has to the wider world. We’ve always been a strangely connected place for a small city on Superior, and it’s time to toast our surprisingly cosmopolitan community.
Celebrated local history authors including Tyler Tichelaar and Sonny Longtine will read excerpts from their books. Members of the audience can buy signed books and discuss local history research and the art of writing with authors in a relaxed setting.… Read the rest
