The Festival of the Desert will be presented on Thursday, November 15 from 7:30 to 10 p.m. in the Great Lakes Rooms of the University Center at NMU. Like the ever changing light of the Sahara that inspires it, the Festival of the Desert will be an experience in musical contrasts. The first set will feature Grammy Award Winner Mamadou Diabate of southern Mali, playing his beautiful, lilting kora, the 21 stringed harp lute of West Africa. The second set will electrify audiences with desert blues-rock sounds of Tinariwen from northern Mali and southern Algeria. Tinariwen is one of the rare crossover groups that have gained acclaim in both rock and world music circiles. The Festival of the Desert is a one of a kind musical event that should make musical history in Marquette. Tickets are: Students $6; NMU faculty/staff $10; Public $15.
