NMU Board Approves Housing, Dining Rates for 2018-19 Academic Year

Marquette, Michigan – The Northern Michigan University Board of Trustees yesterday approved housing and dining rates for the 2018-19 academic year. The cost of a standard double-occupancy room in the traditional residence halls and the “gold constant meal pass” dining option will be $5,203 per semester, an increase of $164 to cover inflationary cost adjustments and maintenance needs. Double-occupancy rooms in The Woods complex with the same meal plan will be $5,595 per semester, an increase of $163.

The Woods is a new student housing complex on Northern’s campus. Four buildings are occupied, with the final two scheduled to open for the fall 2018 semester. National collegiate housing developer EdR is building and managing The Woods facilities through a public-private partnership with NMU.

“This is an appropriate time to congratulate several people on the success of The Woods project,” said Board Chair Robert Mahaney. “What stands there today is really remarkable. Kudos have to be given to Vice President Gavin Leach for his vision and his ability to create this excellent housing project using the public-private partnership model. It was a fiscally responsible way to achieve this while at the same time building $80 million in new housing stock. We also need to congratulate [Housing Director] Jeff Korpi and his team for handling the logistics of getting students into the new buildings—including some that moved mid-year—and meeting all of the deadlines. It was not an easy task.”

In other action during its abbreviated business session, the board:

  • Recognized the NMU women’s golf team and Nursing Professor Nancy Maas for their lifesaving assistance in two separate incidents involving individuals confronting a health crisis.
  • Approved a tenure-track assistant professor appointment for Jason Schneider (transfer from term appointment).
  • Approved revisions to the ASNMU student government organization’s constitution.
