Marquett – Peter White Library will host a meeting of its new book club, Sci-Fi on Tap, on Wednesday, August 16 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Tap Room at the Ore Dock Brewing Company in downtown Marquette.
The final utopian novel of this summer, “Uglies” by Scott Westerfeld, published in 2005, explores creating a utopian society by making everyone both beautiful and the same: big eyes, full lips, perfect muscle to fat ratio. Sixteen-year-old Tally Youngblood is on the cusp of undergoing the operation to become a pretty when she meets Shay. Unlike Tally, Shay doesn’t want to become a pretty, but plans on running away to live in the Smokes, a community outside this artificial utopia. Tally does not run away with Shay, but is forced to follow her by Special Circumstances who want to destroy the Smokes, where she learns that there is more to the operation than just making a person pretty.
Come to the club, enjoy a beer, and express your thoughts on this novel. The group will also take time at the meeting to choose books for the Fall. There is no admission charge to attend. For more information, visit www.pwpl.info or call 226-4318.
