Students in grades four through 12 have the opportunity to participate in the National History Day Michigan Region 1 competition Saturday, March 22 in the Memorial Union Building at Michigan Tech University in Houghton. Region 1 includes 12 counties in the Central and Western Upper Peninsula, including the Marquette, Escanaba, Iron Mountain, Ironwood and the Copper Country areas. The theme of this years competition is Conflict and Compromise in History. Students will participate in categories ranging from essays and exhibits on historical topics to creation of a Web site or documentary. Winning regional entries may move on to the state finals competition, and could continue to the national finals in Washington, D.C. Students may participate without direct sponsorship from a school, although many schools have teachers responsible for their own in-school History Day competition. The event will include an awards ceremony and community showcase period for viewing student work. The entry deadline for the regional competition is Monday, March 3. Information and entry forms are available from the Historical Society of Michigan at www.hsmichigan.org, from regional coordinator Jane Nordberg at 337-4272.
