Marquette County Treasurer’s Report

By Pete Mackin, for Great Lakes Radio News

MARQUETTE – Marquette County Treasurer Ann Gerioux is presenting her first annual report to the county commissioners this month. Gerioux was recently appointed to replace former Treasurer Gary Yoder, who retired prior to the end of his term.

The report is – for the most part – a fairly routine assessment of the investments of the various county entities’ savings, investment and checking accounts. Commissioner Bruce Heikkila asked Gerioux to review a couple of low interest earning accounts – a request seconded by several commissioners.

One bright point in the report is the fact that Marquette’s two percent tax foreclosure rate is far below the state average of roughly seven percent. Gerioux notes that the Upper Peninsula doesn’t have major manufacturing plants closing as downstate Michigan is experiencing right now – a factor she considers in the different rates.

Commissioners will officially weigh in on the report in their Regular Meeting, Tuesday, Feb. 19, at 6 p.m. in the Henry A. Skewis Annex of the Marquette County Courthouse.
