Veterans Mental Health Teleconference at NMU – 11/04/2016

Marquette, MichiganNovember 3, 2016 – The annual Returning Veterans Mental Health Conference coordinated by Michigan Area Health Education Center will be offered at five locations statewide, including Northern Michigan University. It originates from Mt. Pleasant and will be simulcast at NMU’s Olson Library from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4. The conference is geared toward medical professionals, social workers, behavioral and mental health providers and other healthcare providers involved in the care of patients who have served in the military.

Maj. Gen. Gregory J. Vadnais, adjutant general and director of Military and Veterans Affairs for Michigan, will be the keynote speaker. He will address recent changes in Michigan to improve veterans’ access to quality care. Other sessions will explore virtual care platforms to achieve patient-centered care to veterans in their homes and communities; identifying and treating “moral injury” in veterans with PTSD; understanding military culture and the role it plays in preventing access to care for veterans; the VA “Choice” program and how it improves community care to veterans; and new research in Gulf War Syndrome toxic pollutants and related recommendations.

U.P. Area Health Education Center at NMU is hosting the local simulcast. The cost is $65, or $20 for NMU students. It includes breakfast, lunch and CE credits. To register, visit https://returningveteransahec.eventbrite.com.
