Marquette – The public is welcome to attend an assembly of wooden and birch bark canoes on Saturday, August 20 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Tourist Park on the Dead River in Marquette.
On display will be historically significant antique wooden canoes and modern hand-built bark and wood strip canoes. Demonstrations from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. will include canvassing of wooden canoes, aspects of birch bark canoe construction, constructing a willow frame coracle, and paddle carving. Solo and tandem paddling instruction and a water safety demonstration will take place on the river.
Vendors will be selling canoe and camping related items. The day will conclude with a “Parade of Canoes” at 7:30 p.m. on the Dead River. Boats will be launched from the beach area at Tourist Park and spectators are welcome to view this historical parade from the beach or from the fishing pier along the north shoreline.
The event is sponsored by the UP Chapter of the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association. The event is free of charge to those who are not displaying a boat. For more information or with questions about displaying wooden canoes,
