Position – Assistant Sports Director

Great Lakes Radio, Inc. (GLR) is seeking a passionate, qualified, detail-oriented sports professional with strong computer and communications abilities who can develop close and productive relationships with athletic directors, sponsors, and GLR staff, while providing strong support of sales team through those relationships.

The successful candidate will handle all aspects of sports for all stations at GLR including but not limited to ensuring that sports sponsors receive the full array of options promised and that GLR Sports is the gold standard for sports coverage in our market.


Responsibilities Include:
  • Equipment Management
  • Announcer Coordination
  • Board Op Coordination
  • Game Promotions
  • Organizing and Managing  Weekly Sports Shows and Daily Sports Promos
  • Maintaining Online Presence by providing definitive coverage, archives and promotions for the games we broadcast
  • Handling/Writing Press Releases
  • Internal Information Management
  • Inter- and Intra-Station Communications
  • Up-to-Date Public Promotions of Sports on FoxSportsMarquette.com, UpLocalSports.com, etc. to be used by our schools, the public, our online visitors and all station(s) personnel–especially sales.

The successful candidate will deliver results that satisfy our public and contractual duties while delivering the highest quality on-air and online broadcast quality. The goal is that for every dollar spent on sports compensation, several times as much is made through sports sponsorships and online and non-traditional revenue opportunities.

Every aspect of excellent sports promotions, sports programming, online promotions, sports broadcast technology, and the broadcasts will be the responsibility of the Sports Director, who will coordinate with other department directors, sales support, web support, traffic, operations, and especially sales to achieve the goals of GLR.

Select Tasks Beyond Sport Competence and Previous Broadcast Experience (both required)

  • Report and write with a strong sense of urgency, energy and tenacity
  • Deliver effective both sports reports and promotional writing and other forms of communications in the modern Multi-Media world
  • Engage and embrace our school communities through frequent posts online,and appearances in other media
  • Write clearly and authoritatively, with sophistication, absolute accuracy and balance, all while doing it on deadline and in a variety of technology tools and social media platforms.
  • Must understand audience needs and produce socially sharable content consistently and frequently
  • Edit game photo galleries from photographs and videos and coordinate with GLR’s multi-media Department to improve content
  • Review posts by board ops and announcers for quality and clarity and engagement.
  • Increase page views, sports stream usage, sports audio archive visits though sports content created
  • Use smartphone photos and videos to help create promotional and sales charts and supplemental content.
  • Work with all school calendars and athletic directors and schools to coordinate the best sports programming possible as required under agreements with those schools.
  • Collaborates effectively with others, along with communicate and work effectively with a various resources to give a complete picture of sports coverage
  • Must have reliable transportation

Take personal and professional reins of the sports at GLR delivering the results as if it were their own. The ideal candidate is so passionate and committed that they’d be ashamed if any part of our sports coverage isn’t top quality, both on-air or online.
He or She takes a personal interest in making sure that on-air staff says the score last night. If some aspect of our sports efforts falls short, the successful candidate takes immediate action to make sure errors and mistakes don’t happen again.

Coordinating actions is barest part of job, successful communication, policies, practices, procedures, and staff training are an integral part of success.The successful candidate fixes problems. They are the master of the system, planning for the unexpected, and delivering even under tough circumstances.He or she has the ability to make sales people feel confident about our sports programs and products, because, in part, salespeople are confident the GLR Sports Directors.

The GLR Sports Director knows their stuff, gets it right, and generates excitement about the results.When there is the slightest problem in a broadcast, he or she gets on the phone, remotely logs in, or even hops in car and runs down to fix it. That’s because the successful sports director monitors results, double-checks efforts, verifies, and uses that information to improve the outcome every single day.

The successful candidate is as comfortable at lunch with a big client or school’s athletic director as they are solving an unbalanced sound equipment or working out the kinks in phone lines at various venues or trying to bring various concerned parties together to create the best sports broadcast and sponsorship environment possible for our schools, stations, and listeners. Whatever the unknowns, the successful candidate will effectively cope to meet every challenge.

The ideal candidate does their job because they love the stuff. The ideal candidate has initiative, is creative, and lives for the best game broadcast possible. The ideal can motivate and lead others to the excitement as well.

He or she sees every part of the job as part of the bigger sports programming mission. Sports is a product to sell, a show to produce, and a passion to partake. The Sports Director’s passion for sports delivers premium quality broadcasts and constantly increases sports sponsorships.

The successful candidate seeks out sports sales, sometimes even participating directly in sales. He or she makes the bottom line rise because the successful candidate never forgets the bottom line.

The ideal candidate works to make sure that every sponsor receives what GLR promises. Every opportunity for new sponsorship is pursued.

The ideal candidate may know that there is an upper limit to the on-air audience, but online efforts must deliver more and more visitors each week. Video, photos, and write-ups of games are just expected.

Awesome coverage online should be easily distilled down to a 15-page proposal for each school to renew sports contracts each year.
