Calendar – Education – Environmental and Sustainability Camp for High School Students – Early Registration Deadline – June 1

Marquette – Northern Michigan University will hold an Environmental and Sustainability Camp for high school-age students July 24- through 30. Students will experience first hand how scientists incorporate technology and field experiences into studies of the changing environment.

By exploring pristine inland lakes and hiking ancient mountains, students will learn how people have interacted for thousands of years with the landscapes of the Upper Peninsula. They will experience Marquette to gain perspective about urban planning and historical aspects of urban growth; paddle the AuTrain to monitor water quality issues; visit the student-created Superior Acre Permaculture garden on campus to learn about the possibilities of sustainable agriculture; and tour local mines to learn where our minerals come from, what techniques are used to extract them and how mining affects the environment and society.

The camp covers all necessary fees and transportation associated with field experiences. The registration is $550 and will increase to $650 after June 1. To register, visit www.nmu.edu/environmental-science-camp. For more information, call 227-2002 or contact seaborg@nmu.edu.
