Athena Award Recipient to be Announced at Chamber Annual Dinner – Oct. 8

Escanaba, MichiganOctober 8, 2015 – The Delta Chamber of Commerce will be recognizing businesses and community leaders at Thursday’s Annual Dinner. Outgoing Chamber President Lanna Scannell will be the recipient of the nationally recognized Athena Award. It promotes the outstanding accomplishments of women in the community.

“I’m really very grateful and will certainly do my best to live up to it,” Scannell said.

Scannell started as the Lifestyles editor at the Daily Press in 1990. She worked as community relations and development director at OSF St. Francis Hospital & Medical Group from 1994 until this year when she accepted a position with the OSF Health Care System in Illinois.

She served as chair of the Substance and Violence Education (SAVE) Council for Delta County and the Central Upper Peninsula Chapter of the American Red Cross. She was a board member for the Delta County Cancer Alliance and member of the Escanaba Rotary Club and Escanaba Noon Kiwanis. She was also a member of the Bay Bank Board of Directors.

She participated as a facilitator with Business Professionals of America, judging and offering feedback to U.P. high school students at annual “Final Interview Skills” competitions. She was an original participant in the Chamber’s leadership development program Delta Force and continued as a facilitator with the program.

Scannell usually presents the Athena Award at the Chamber’s Annual Dinner. She served as the first chair of the Athena Award committee. Tonight the award will be presented to her.

“I vividly remember thinking when we chose Jean Jokipii for the first award that I’d hope to be like that someday. To make the impact that some of these women have made, Elnora Vader, Paddy Fitch and Bonnie Wenick-Kutz. It’s a tremendous honor to be included in that group,” said Scannell.

By recognizing women in leadership positions, Scannell says they hoped to encourage young girls to be a vibrant part of the workforce and make an impact in the community.

Other awards being presented tonight include Business of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Philanthropy Award, Century Award, Community Ambassador Award, Educational Excellence Award and Bay College Scholarship Award.

The Chamber Annual Dinner and Delta Force Recognition will be held tonight at 5:30 p.m. at the Island Resort and Casino.
