One Book One Community October Events Announced – Sept. 25

Marquette, Michigan September 25, 2015 – The One Book One Community program will present several free October events related to this year’s selection, Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan. The program encourages Marquette County and the Northern Michigan University community to share the joy of reading and the free exchange of ideas through a common book. It is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a title that honors the long history of books.

A book drive will begin Thursday, Oct. 1, at Snowbound books at 118 N. Third Street. Children’s books suitable for grades K-5 and in good condition will be collected for Graveraet’s school library. Books can also be dropped off at any One Book One Community event.

Also on Oct. 1, the Ore Dock Brewing Company is hosting “Ten Books and a Beer: Celebrating 10 years of the One Book One Community Program” from 7-8:30 p.m. The public is encouraged to bring their favorite book, participate in literary discussions and enjoy beverages. All 10 One Book One Community featured selections will also be on display.

Peter White Public Library will host a book discussion of Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 6.

On Monday, Oct. 12, Peter White Public Library will host a screening of the movie Her at 7 p.m. From the unique perspective of Oscar-nominated filmmaker Spike Jonze and starring Joaquin Phoenix, Her is an original love story that explores the evolving nature and risks of intimacy in the modern world.

Peter White Public Library will host “24-Hour Digital Resources @ Your Library” from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13. Attendees will be taught how to access and use the many digital resources available in local libraries, including digital and audio books. The featured programs include Mango, Overdrive, Genalogy, MEL and Zinio.

Snowbound Books will present Marquette’s 24-Hour Bookstore from 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19, to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20. The store will keep its doors open round the clock with activities and book specials. Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore author Robin Sloan will be on hand to sign books from 1-2 a.m. Also featured will be Altered Books’ presentation on making art from old books, a book discussion of the One Book selection at 7 p.m., and a 10 percent off select books sale from midnight to 6 a.m.

Author Robin Sloan will lead a presentation and Q&A for students at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, in 1100 Jamrich Hall. NMU is also hosting a public presentation and book signing for the public at 7 p.m. in the same location.
