Calendar – Community – Beethoven and Banjos – Sept. 25

Marquette, Michigan – September 24, 2015 – The Upper Peninsula’s new series of cross-genre annual concerts will feature a collaboration between members of Carnegie Hall’s affiliate ensemble, Decoda, and the Americana roots duo, Red Tail Ring. They will present “Beethoven and Banjos” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, in Reynolds Recital Hall at Northern Michigan University.

Artistic director and U.P. native Evan Premo said, “The music will be chosen and composed to be a direct celebration of the U.P.’s landscape, culture and heritage.”

Decoda is a chamber ensemble comprised of virtuoso musicians, entrepreneurs and passionate advocates of the arts. Based in New York City, the group creates “innovative performances and engaging projects with partners around the world.” Their projects have reached audiences in schools, hospitals, prisons and concert halls. Recent travels have included Abu Dhabi, Iceland, Japan, Mexico, Germany, China and Switzerland. Members of Decoda who will be perform at NMU include Evan Premo playing the double bass, Meena Bhasin on viola and Owen Dalby on violin.

Red Tail Ring is the Americana roots duo of Michiganders Laurel Premo and Michael Beauchamp. Whether rendering a traditional tune or one of their original compositions, the duo infuses each song with “musical imagination, haunting harmonies and instrumental artistry” on fiddle, guitar, mandolin, jawharp and through foot stomping.

Donations will be accepted at the door with the guide of “Come as you are, pay what you can.” This program is supported in part by a grant from the Copper Country Community Arts Council through the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs Regranting Program.
