DNR to replace Big Shag Lake Boat Launch in Marquette County Beginning August 17th

Gwinn, Michigan – The Michigan Department of Natural Resources today announced that the Big Shag Lake boating access site, west of Gwinn, will be closed beginning Monday, Aug. 17, for installation of a new concrete boat ramp.

The access site is located in Forsyth Township, off Marquette County Road 557, along Knudsen Road. There are no alternate boat launches in the area, but people can search for other boat launches, harbors and marinas throughout the state by visiting Michigan’s Recreational Boating Information System site.

A DNR parks and recreation construction crew will work to replace the boat ramp. The $12,000 project is expected to be completed by Friday, Aug. 21.

“Once the project is completed, the new ramp will provide improved access for boaters and anglers to Big Shag Lake,” said Jeff Kakuk, unit supervisor at the DNR’s Escanaba field office.

The project is being funded through the Michigan State Waterways Fund, a restricted fund derived from boat registration fees and the Michigan marine fuel tax, which is used for the construction, operation and maintenance of recreational boating facilities, harbors and inland waterways.

Big Shag Lake is a popular inland lake, home to various gamefish including walleye, bluegill, bass and northern pike.
