Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Sand Point Boat Access Site

Munising, MI – Shifting sands along the shoreline of Lake Superior have built up to effectively impede the launching of trailered watercraft at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore’s Sand Point boat access site. In the past, the park has removed accumulated sand when necessary. Management actions to maintain the site are currently being reviewed for compliance with state and federal regulations and adherence to National Park Service management policies. This access site is identified in the park’s General management Plan, and the park intends to maintain it as a shallow water access site, providing free public access to Lake Superior for watercraft that are appropriately sized to utilize the location.

Superintendent Mike Pflaum says “We are aware of the public concern with the Sand Point boat access maintenance and we are carefully considering how to proceed. We want to ensure that our actions are in compliance with law and policy and that the outstanding natural resources of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore are well protected. We expect to have a plan developed by May 15.”

While this process is taking place, the Sand Point access site is open to public use, although trailered watercraft will have difficulty launching due to significant sand accumulation and at times may not be able to successfully launch.
