Dr. Philip A. Lowry Named Medical Director For UP Health System Cancer Center

MARQUETTE – Cancer Treatment in the Upper Peninsula is being strengthened by the naming of a new Medical Director for the UP Health System Cancer Center.

UPHS – Marquette CEO Ed Banos announced that Philip Andrew Lowry, M.D., has accepted the Medical DirectorDr. Philip A. Lowry Named Medical Director

For UP Health System Cancer Center position for the UPHS Cancer Center. Dr. Lowry comes to the Upper Peninsula from Guthrie Clinic in Sayre, Penn., where he was Chief Medical Director of Hematology and Oncology since 2010. Prior to that, Dr. Lowry was Medical Director of the Centre Medical and Surgical Associates Cancer Program in State College, PA.

Banos said, “Dr. Lowry is a Yale University trained physician and brings with him expertise and experience that will undoubtedly serve to lead the UPHS Cancer Center into a new era of program expansion, while further strengthening the UP community’s access to quality care. We are indeed fortunate as a region to be able to attract a medical care provider of his caliber to the crucial role of Cancer Center Medical Director.”

He completed his undergraduate degree at Harvard College, Cambridge, MA, in 1977; and then went on to graduate from Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, CT, in 1981. Dr. Lowry completed a residency in Internal Medicine (1984) and a Hematology/Oncology Fellowship (1991) at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center in Charlottesville, VA.

“I am excited to join the Upper Peninsula Health System for many reasons,” Dr. Lowry said. “ The area is physically stunning and the people I have met so far are delightful.  Cancer treatment here has already reached excellent levels with national recognition of that, but the partnership with the Duke University Cancer Network promises to move that to the absolute cutting edge of care.”

He added, “The very geography that is so beautiful is also a challenge – patients in the Upper Peninsula must travel great distances to get great care.  I hope to work with the team here to bring that care as close as possible to where patients live and have their families and support systems in place.”

Board certified in Hematology/Oncology, Dr. Lowry will see patients at clinics in Marquette and Doctor’s Park in Escanaba. He will lead the UPHS Cancer Center clinical team, along with act as clinical liaison with the Duke Cancer Network, of which UPHS – Marquette was named an affiliate in late 2014.

Duke Cancer Network brings an array of oncology-related services to a regional network of community cancer programs. These programs share Duke’s commitment to excellence in cancer care through patient care, clinical research, and education. Affiliations are tailored to the needs of each program, with services ranging from clinical services to benchmarking to consultative program assessment and development.

Duke’s Cancer Network provides physicians in affiliated communities access to cutting-edge research programs and provides education and training programs to physicians, nurses, and other health professionals. Dr. Lowry will reside in Marquette with his wife, Candy.
