MARQUETTE, MI – In honor of National Library Week (April 12-18, 2015) the John M. Longyear Research Library is again hosting Longyear Library 101 on Wednesday, April 15 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Librarians Rosemary Michelin and Beth Gruber will explain how to use the library and share the stories of unique treasures found in the library and archives.
Materials that will be highlighted include Charles Harvey’s 1854 letters about the Soo Locks construction, maritime materials related to the wreck of the Ira Chafee and John Longyear’s travel journals and photographs. Another archival collection featured in the program is a series of real estate appraisals donated to the Marquette Regional History Center by Bruce Closser of Closser Associates. This large collection reveals the changing landscape and buildings of Marquette County in the last 50 years, chronicling contemporary history.
One site where significant changes can be observed is on Hewitt Avenue in Marquette. In 1956 Bruce’s father Earl Closser appraised six homes on the street for the Marquette Board of Education. After being purchased, they were demolished and Parkview Elementary School was built on the site. Other examples include both the Marquette and Westwood Malls, the former Tracy Mine and the former K. I. Sawyer AFB. This free program will be presented in the library at the Marquette Regional History Center, 145 W. Spring Street. For more information call 226-3571, visit marquettehistory.org.
